Kwahu Paragliding
Origins of Kwahu Easter & “O Kwahu!” — From Homecoming to Hype
Have you ever wondered how the now-famous Kwahu “O Kwahu!” Easter festivities began? Before paragliding, before media hype, and long before thousands crowded the Kwahu town every year?
At its heart, Kwahu Easter started as a simple tradition rooted in family, community, and spiritual rhythm.
For generations, the people of Kwahu, “the Kwahus” maintained a deep connection to their ancestral mountainous towns in the Eastern Region. The popular adage, “kwahu fuor p3 adwuma”, is deeply rooted in historic events in their desire to escape the cruelty of the denchira king in the 1700s.
The Kwahu state is a conglomerate of several smaller states (Kowu, Akoawu, and Kodiabɛ) that joined together. Living in a rugged, mountainous area, they were historically shielded from major regional conflicts. As an Akan group, they share linguistic and cultural similarities with the Ashanti and Akyem, including matrilineal inheritance. Known as successful entrepreneurs, they were active in the 19th-century rubber trade and later became dominant in retail business across Ghana.
Many Kwahus were hardworking traders who migrated across Ghana or abroad for business, yet their hearts and families remained in Kwahu. Because much of their momentum was tied to the commercial calendar, especially during busy periods like Christmas, the original traditional festivals lost traction in favor of a new annual rhythm: Easter
Now, Easter became the time when:
- Families returned home
- Old friendships were renewed
- Villagers met loved ones they hadn’t seen all year
- Issues were properly settled,
This homecoming tradition wasn’t started as a tourist event, it was a chance for Kwahus to reconnect with their roots and one another.
Over time, the gathering became more than reunion it became O Kwahu! a name shouted from town to town during the festive period, a call so vibrant that even people outside the region began to take notice. Musicians, storytellers, and families from Accra, Kumasi, Tema, and farther started joining, turning what was once a personal journey into a national phenomenon.
When Celebration Met Tourism: Paragliding Takes Flight
In 2005, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts saw a chance to build on this organic momentum. The Kwahu Easter homecoming, already a thriving cultural moment became the platform for something extraordinary: paragliding on the Odweanoma Ridge.
Introduced by then Minister of Tourism after a tour of the Kwahu Ridge, the first Ghana Paragliding Festival was launched in 2005 as part of the Easter festivities, marking the start of what would become a major tourism highlight each year.
